Science has worked wonders in recent times. It has revolutionized life in every field like travel, transportation, communication, entertainment, agriculture, industry, medicine, trade and commerce. We have electricity which has made our life comfortable in various ways. We have the atomic bomb, which is a great source of power. Now it is up to us whether we use science for good purposes or take undue advantage of it. No doubt science has placed extremely destructive weapons in the hands of man which can destroy the whole world in seconds but it neither compels man nor creates the condition to use them. Our greed for power and madness is what drives us to use destructive weapons because we want to annihilate each other.

Undoubtedly science has contributed a lot towards world peace to which we should be bound. Science has given rapid means of transportation and communication which help us to win wars more quickly. Therefore no long war is possible. Railways, steam ships and airplanes make it easy to send troops and food supplies to distant places in a very short time. Thus, the enemy is checked immediately.

Means of communication like telegraph, telephone and wireless play an important role in controlling war or war like situation. Faster means of communication help administrators to bring serious and violent situations under control. US President Eisenhower once said that atomic and hydrogen bombs secured world peace in a more viable way. The people of the world did not understand its meaning and were very surprised to read this comment but the President was very right. It is true that nuclear weapons are destructive. If war breaks out and these lethal weapons are used, it is certain that the entire civilization will be completely destroyed. This horror of modern science compels nations to think many times before going to war.

The means of entertainment can be used to establish peace in the world. Horrible war scenes, post-war plight of people and scenes of destruction can be depicted on screen so that people can learn from them. Post-war effects can be broadcast over the radio. All these things can compel a man to decide not to fight.

Scientific inventions have given us valuable machines. With their help, production has increased manifold and now even the backward and poor countries are enjoying a better standard of living. War is undoubtedly a curse and should be avoided at any cost. This is possible only when the well being of every individual is brought to the fore. We are not suffering from a divided atom but from a divided mind.

War takes place first in the human mind, then on the field. When the spirit of brotherhood fades away from the mind and when we forget kindness, goodness and fellowship, we enter into wars. Therefore, we are responsible for wars, not science. However, today man has become more conscious of the need for world peace than ever before. They have started using their scientific knowledge for peaceful purposes.
